Crete
Crete, an island of Greece, southeast of the mainland, constituting a region of the country. The island is oblong in shape. Its area is 8335 sq km (3218 sq mi) and the population is 536,980 (1991). The capital city and principal seaport is Khania. Iraklion is the largest town. Crete has a mostly mountainous terrain.
